DEATHS IN POLICE CUSTODY SINCE 1981
JOXE ARREGI IZAGIRRE, 30, died at the Carabanchel Prison (Spain) in February 1981 after being tortured during the 9 days he was held in incommunicado arrest at the Direccion General de Seguridad in Madrid.
ESTEBAN MURUETAGOLENA SCOLA, 38, died at his home in March 1982, after 10 days in incommunicado arrest in a Spanish police-station. Autopsy showed evidence of torture.
MIKEL ZABALZA GARATE, 32, his body was found in the Bidasoa river in December 1985. He was found handcuffed. He had been arrested in November 1984 by the Spanish Civil Guard. Police alleged Zabalza had escaped. Witnesses at the police-station claimed having seen Zabalza laying down in a stretcher at the police-station and that he looked too weak to have attempted to escape.
MIKEL ARRASTIA AGIRRE, 28, was captured by the Spanish Civil Guard and taken into custody. Police claimed Arrastia killed himself.
JUAN CALVO AZABAL, 42, died in August 1993 at the regional police headquarters in Southern Basque Country, under Spanish administration. Autopsy showed his death was caused by tear-gas spray. His body showed extensive bruisings and injuries.
GURUTZE YANCI IGERATEGI, 31, died in September 1993 at the Civil Guard headquarters in Madrid where she was being held in incommunicado arrest. Authorities claimed she died from a heart attack.
XABIER KALPASORO GOLMAIO, 26, died in September 1993 from the injuries he received when he fell from a window on the third floor of a Spanish police headquarters. Police claimed he tried to escape while being interrogated.
